Wow I've never heard that before, it does make a lot of sense though. That's kind of worrying as I hardly ever see any bees around nowadays - even though I can remember seeing loads of them as a child. Very sad. :-/
That is interesting if he did say that. There is massive panic among bee-keepers in the USA as who's honeybee hives are dying out across the USA enmasse... a billion $ industry and what is the cause hasn't been identified... and apparently it is serious enough for top White House politicians to be closely monitoring the situation.
My guess would be that bees are what is known as an indicator species. The numbers of an indicator species, for example frogs, can be used as a measure of the health of an entire ecosystem.
my guess would be that bees are resposible for pollenating the vast majority of mankind's food supply (vegetative anyway)

It's not true about pollination, Many birds and thousands of other species of insect pollinate plants. I think Einstein was using it as a metaphor, that it doesn't take much to tip the balance of nature and Humankind will be in deep shite.
