Outdoor wedding...what can I use to protect the cake from bugs/bees?

Our wedding is in a couple weeks. It will be held outdoors and I'm worried that flies and bees will get to the cake before we get around to cutting it.





It will be out for about an hour before it is cut. Any suggestions on what to use to protect it?

She had her wedding in Hawaii and the bugs were awful, so the venue provided a canopy (they're used to it, I guess) and it was quite pretty. It looked like a regular Pier One mosquito netting canopy, but they'd sewn ivory ribbons on to trail from the frame clear down to the hem. While Citronella candles may help keep bugs away, you want to be careful that the cake doesn't absorb the ';flavor'; of Citronella or anything else you might put down. And the use of a net is going to take away from the beauty of your net and annoy anyone who wants to take pictures of it. The best thing you can probably do is treat the grass (or ask the venue to if you don't have the ability) with a mosquito repellent spray at least a day before the wedding OR use some Dr. T's granules that can be sprinkled on the grass around any area that you don't want mosquitoes. I hope it's not going to be too hot out for your cake to be outdoors during the whole reception. :-| If you must keep it out, you can try lighting some citronella candles around the table where you're going to put the cake. Those keep bugs away. You can also try those torches that most ppl use for luau type parties.

There is something (I am sorry I don't know what it is) that was sprayed on the ground of an outdoor event that we went to to keep pests away.





It was sprayed many hours before the event into the grass and it worked tremendously and there was no ';tell tale'; smell.





A beautifully draped white tulle over the cake would be pretty as well.

If you're able to place the in a gazebo or something with a celing, you could hang a pretty mosquito net to drap around the cake while it's just sitting about. Maybe even place a few citronella candles around the net as well?

Hopefully you are having fondant frosting rather than buttercreme, cuz otherwise you won't have to worry about the bugs, you'll have to worry about a melted cake!





Maybe your baker has some ideas, or your venue has some screens or something... or maybe it can be brought out later, right before it's ready to be cut...

Make a loose tent of sorts out of tulle fabric, but don't let the fabric touch the cake.

I wouldn't recommend citronella candles as they are toxic and the fragrance may taint the cake.

maybe a large box flipped over on top, you can wrap it in paper to make it look a bit nicer





maybe use a small screened in tent and put in on a table inside it



You could try spraying RAID all over it. I think that would keep all the bugs away from it.
