Is it true that bees possess the ability to count?

By counting their steps in a little dance they do to communicate where nectar is a far distance away.Is it true that bees possess the ability to count?
G'day Sam,

Thanks for your question.

Yes they can. At least up to 4. All with the brain the size of a grain of sand.

I have attached a source for your reference.

Bees can count, but after ';four'; they start to become less and less reliable.

But their mathematical abilities aren't restricted to counting. Bees can calculate (relatively) vast distances. They can also predict, numerically and spatially, patterned placements of food sources. Scientists would put honey at one point during the morning, then the next morning at the same time they would move the honey a set distance. After a short while, the bees could predict where the food would be the next day, as they would be waiting at the honey spot without the honey actually being there yet.

Bees can also tell if another bee is drunk (they like fruity and mixed drinks) and they assign ';bouncers'; in every hive that will escort drunk bees out of the hive until they sober up. Not part of your question, but related, I'd say. :)
