It is simply a cultural euphemism. Anyone who explains about sex and reproduction does not actually use bird and bees in their explanation. It is a polite way of saying you are going to have a talk with your child about procreation. It is rarely even done these days in that way, children learn from television, the internet or even school about these things long before most parents have 'the talk'. The phrase was most widely used in the 1940's %26amp; 50's.
Bees don't have sex the way we do, so I dunno why they use that.
